VPN vs Proxy: What's the Difference and Which Should You Use?
Proxies hide your IP but expose your data. VPNs encrypt everything. Learn the real difference, when to use each, and why a free proxy can cost you more than a cheap VPN.
Search "hide my IP" and you will see two options: proxies and VPNs. They seem interchangeable. They are not. A proxy changes your visible location. A VPN encrypts your entire connection. One is a disguise, the other is a locked room. If you handle passwords, financial data, or anything private, only one actually protects you.
How Proxies Work
A proxy server sits between your device and the internet. When you configure your browser or app to use a proxy, your requests go to the proxy first, which forwards them to the destination. The destination sees the proxy's IP, not yours.
The critical limitation: the connection between your device and the proxy is not encrypted by default. If you visit an HTTP site, your data travels in plain text through the proxy. Even with HTTPS, the proxy can see which domains you visit, and the connection between you and the proxy remains unencrypted unless you configure additional encryption.
Proxies come in several varieties. HTTP proxies handle web traffic and can inspect or cache it. HTTPS proxies create an encrypted tunnel for HTTPS traffic but can still see the destination domain. SOCKS5 proxies operate at a lower level, forwarding raw packets including UDP traffic, making them popular for torrenting. Residential proxies use real home IP addresses and are harder to detect, while datacenter proxies are cheaper and faster but more easily blocked.
How VPNs Work
A Virtual Private Network creates an encrypted tunnel between your device and a remote server. Unlike a proxy, a VPN operates at the system level, encrypting all traffic from every application on your device before it leaves.
When you activate a VPN, your device creates a virtual network interface that encrypts every data packet with AES-256 or ChaCha20 before sending it to the VPN server. The server decrypts and forwards your requests. Responses travel back through the same encrypted tunnel. This happens automatically for every app — your browser, email client, messaging apps, and system updates all go through the tunnel without individual configuration.
VPNs also handle DNS differently. All DNS queries are routed through the encrypted tunnel to the VPN provider's servers, preventing your ISP from seeing which domains you visit.
Modern VPN protocols include WireGuard, which offers a lean codebase and kernel-level speeds reaching 500-950 Mbps, and OpenVPN, the battle-tested standard with 400,000 lines of audited code. Premium providers also develop custom protocols like NordLynx and Lightway for better speed and privacy.
Key Differences
Encryption. This is the defining difference. A VPN encrypts all your traffic with military-grade encryption. Breaking AES-256 would take billions of years with all the computing power on Earth. A proxy provides zero encryption between you and the proxy server — your ISP, network admin, or anyone on your Wi-Fi can see everything you do.
Scope. VPNs protect every application on your device automatically. Proxies only protect the specific application you configure. Configure a proxy in your browser, and your email client, messaging apps, and background services still use your real IP and unencrypted connection.
Trust. With a proxy, you must trust the operator completely. They see your unencrypted traffic, including passwords and financial data if you visit non-HTTPS sites. With a reputable no-logs VPN, the provider cannot see your traffic because it is encrypted before it reaches them.
Kill Switch. VPNs include a kill switch that blocks all internet traffic if the VPN connection drops, preventing IP exposure. Proxies have no equivalent protection.
Public Wi-Fi. VPNs protect you on public Wi-Fi by encrypting everything before it leaves your device. Proxies leave the connection between you and the proxy exposed, so anyone on the same network can intercept your data.
When to Use a Proxy
Proxies shine in specific scenarios where encryption is not needed but IP diversity is critical. Web scraping is the most common legitimate use. Companies scrape thousands of websites for pricing data, product reviews, and market intelligence. Proxy rotation services provide thousands of residential IPs that allow scrapers to avoid rate limiting and blocking. VPNs offer only a few thousand shared IPs, making them impractical for scraping at scale.
SEO professionals use proxies to check search rankings from different geographic locations. Ad verification companies use them to confirm ads appear correctly across regions. For casual geo-block bypass of non-sensitive content — like watching a region-locked YouTube video without logging in — a proxy can suffice.
When to Use a VPN
VPNs are the right choice for the vast majority of internet users. Use a VPN when handling any sensitive data: passwords, banking, credit cards, personal communications, or work documents. Use one on public Wi-Fi in coffee shops, airports, and hotels, where packet sniffing and man-in-the-middle attacks are common. Use one to prevent your ISP from collecting and selling your browsing history.
Streaming geo-blocked content is another major use case. Premium VPNs maintain dedicated streaming servers that actively work to unblock Netflix, BBC iPlayer, and other platforms. Proxies are less reliable because streaming services aggressively detect and block proxy IPs.
For bypassing government censorship, a premium VPN with obfuscation technology is essential. Obfuscation wraps VPN traffic in a layer that mimics standard HTTPS, helping it evade deep packet inspection systems used by China, Russia, and Iran. Proxies offer no meaningful protection against determined adversaries.
Remote workers should use a VPN when accessing company servers, cloud storage, or sensitive documents from untrusted networks. Corporate VPNs provide encrypted access to internal resources, while personal VPNs protect freelancers and digital nomads.
Risks of Free Proxies
Free proxies are among the most dangerous privacy tools available. They cost nothing to use because you become the product. Academic research paints a grim picture. A Stanford study found that 82 percent of free proxy servers modified HTTP traffic, injecting ads, replacing affiliate links, and inserting tracking scripts. A University of California study found 78 percent injected JavaScript ads or cryptojacking code into web pages.
The worst cases involve credential harvesting. Free proxy operators search traffic for login credentials, session tokens, and credit card numbers. Some free proxies operate as botnet nodes, using your connection as an exit point for malicious traffic. If law enforcement traces criminal activity to your IP address, you face legal scrutiny even if you are not the perpetrator.
Even paid proxy services carry risk. A 2026 investigation found that three of the five largest paid proxy providers logged user traffic and sold anonymized browsing data to advertisers.
Free VPNs are not much better. Most free VPNs impose data caps, throttle speeds, and log your activity. Some have been caught selling user bandwidth to botnets. If you are not paying for the product, you are the product.
Recommendations
For everyday privacy and security, use a premium VPN. Services like NordVPN, ExpressVPN, and Surfshark cost $2-4 per month on long-term plans and protect all your devices with encryption, kill switches, and no-logs policies. They are easy to set up — install the app, log in, and click connect.
For web scraping and data collection, use a residential proxy network from providers like Bright Data, Smartproxy, or Oxylabs. This is the one scenario where proxies outperform VPNs.
For torrenting, use a VPN with P2P support and a kill switch. A VPN encrypts your torrent traffic and prevents your ISP from seeing what you download. Some users add a SOCKS5 proxy on top for an extra layer of obfuscation, but this slows speeds significantly.
For casual geo-block bypass without logging into accounts, a proxy can work. But for anything involving sensitive data, public Wi-Fi, or privacy from your ISP, choose a VPN. Proxies hide your IP. VPNs protect your data. Knowing the difference keeps you safe online.
